SCA Academic Assessment
Slidell Christian Academy (SCA) utilizes one of the finest achievement and aptitude test combinations available, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills™ (ITBS), and the Cognitive Abilities Test™ (CogAT). The ITBS is a technically advanced assessment tool that can provide valid and reliable data to evaluate and guide students' progress toward meeting academic standards. The CogAT is an aptitude test that measures a student’s general and specific cognitive abilities. This test measures learned reasoning and problem-solving skills in three areas: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal, which are closely tied to academic success. The CogAT is often used to identify gifted and talented students. These assessment tools provide a wealth of information for SCA teachers and parents.
These standardized tests serve two primary functions:
1. Helping schools objectively assess students’ academic progress and potential from year to year with quantifiable test data based on accepted models of student academic development.
2. Help teachers find out what students know and are able to do, identifying and helping children who have gaps in their learning experience. Administrators will obtain reliable data to evaluate each student’s progress toward meeting content standards for each grade level. Parents will gain an understanding of their children's strengths and weaknesses, and how they as parents can help.
As nationally normed tests, the ITBS and the CogAT provide comparisons of SCA students with students in public and private schools across the United States. These assessment tests are given each spring to students in kindergarten through the eighth grade, and are free to SCA students.
